If I join BARI 2D, what will happen?
  • You may have a heart stress test to see how well your heart handles work, and if the test is abnormal.
  • You will have a coronary arteriogram to find out if you have blockages in the blood supply to your heart .
  • If these tests show you qualify for BARI 2D, you will be randomly assigned to treatment of the heart disease by medication alone or by either angioplasty or bypass surgery. Your physician will determine which procedure is best for you. You will also be randomly assigned to one of the two types of diabetes control medication.
  • You will follow-up in Diabetes Clinic every month for 6 months, then every 3 months. Blood will be drawn to be sure your blood sugar and cholesterol are under control.
  • You will have repeat stress testing and heart evaluations every 12 months.
  • You will continue to see your primary care physician for all other medical conditions.
