Why compare angioplasty or surgery with medical therapy?
In the patients who will be invited to join BARI 2D, it is unknown whether angioplasty or bypass surgery provides a better survival outcome than the newer medical therapy for coronary heart disease.
Why compare two types of medication for treating diabetes?
It is unknown in patients who have both diabetes and coronary heart disease whether it is better to treat diabetes with:
- medications that provide more insulin (like certain tablets that cause the body to make more insulin, or insulin itself)
- medication that increase the sensitivity of the body to the available insulin
