A VITAL STUDY FOR TREATING TYPE 2 DIABETES AND CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE

The BARI 2D trial was a landmark study.

The first major trial to focus exclusively on patients with both diabetes and heart disease.

Patient follow-up was completed November 30, 2008.

I

BARI 2D, a randomized clinical trial, was designed to compare various treatment strategies for diabetes and heart disease to prevent early death, heart attack and stroke.

I

2368 participants were randomized at 49 sites in 6 countries.

I

All subjects were given intensive medical therapy to control cholesterol and blood pressure and given counseling, if needed, to quit smoking and to lose weight.

I

Beyond that, we compared whether prompt revascularization, either bypass surgery or angioplasty, e.g. stents, was more effective than medical therapy alone.

I

At the same time, we also looked at which of two diabetes treatment strategies resulted in better outcomes—insulin-providing versus insulin-sensitizing - that is, increasing the amount of insulin or making the insulin work better.

The results of the BARI 2D Study excited great interest at the American Diabetes Association Annual Meeting in June, 2009.
